An international artist whose urbanity informed his art, Sargent was born in Italy of American parents, and trained there as well as in Paris. He was soon recognized as one of the foremost portraitists of his time, and satisfied demands for portraits from the great and fashionable. Throughout his career he made many trips to America, the first in 1876. This portrait of Ruth Sears Bacon (later Mrs. Austin Cheney) at age three was painted in Newport, Rhode Island, during a second trip to this country in 1887.
